The early November weather was perfect for the Women’s MAPTA PCQ. For the first time, a full 32-team draw competed in the Philadelphia area, at Aronimink and Waynesborough clubs. In the semifinals, Ali Tross and Andrea Dutton held off Karin Kochis and Kori Lannon, 6-3, in the 3rd set to advance to the final. In the other semifinal, it was Stella Ip and Erin Ortiz, who drove up from Maryland, against the top seeds, Laurie Hissey and Jaclyn Williamson. HIssey and Williamson secured the match, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the final. It did not take long for them to hit their stride in that contest, either, as they won, 6-2, 6-1, to capture the trophy!
The men's tournament, named Chaos in a Cage (not a PCQ event), was very exciting as usual with a lot of really good players playing with different partners. It’s always a big question mark as to who is going to get the job done. The semifinals pitted Andrew Sorrentino and Parker Sherry against Sean Seese and Tripp Davis of Huntingdon Valley. This was a great match won by Seese and Davis, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. The other semifinal found Trevor McAndrew and Eric Niesen battling against Mike McGrath and Ed Hughes. McAndrew and Niesen were relentless in their attacking style and won the match, 6-3, 6-2. They went on to beat Seese and Davis in the final, 6-3, 6-2, to win the 2013 cup.
We would like to thank Waynesborough, Aronimink, Philadelphia Country Club, and Conestoga for lending their facilities and courts. We would also like to thank this year’s sponsors: Carmine Caccavale with Pennsylvania Payroll, Brian Aguilar with E-Trade Financial, and Paul Ridder with Tastykake. We appreciate your support! MAPTA would like to thank the entire staff at Overbrook for running the tournament this year.
