The tournament was kicked off with a Friday night party that included clinics, games and food. Then the action kicked into high gear on Saturday with opening round robins followed by single elimination draws.
The group of winners includes some new names, some familiar names, children of current players, and a few children of former junior players. Ted Manges, a finalist in the 10 & Under, is the son of Hardy Manges, who holds both 18 & Under and 15 & Under junior titles. Corey Delaney, winner of the 18 & Under, is the daughter of Bobo Mangan Delaney, who holds two 18 & Under titles (not to mention Women's Mixed and Senior titles).
All contestants received goody bags and great vests, and the winners won director's chairs. In the hands of tournament director Mike Gillespie and a well oiled committee, the tournament was beautifully run.
National Public Radio Covers the Junior Nationals
Those of us who start the day with the radio tuned to National Public Radio got a treat Monday morning when Morning Edition aired a 3 minute segment (in radio time 3 minutes is practically feature length) on the 2010 APTA Junior Nationals, which were held this weekend in New Canaan, CT. Most of our sport's news coverage is local, but occasionally platform tennis hits a wider audience, and it's great to have that happen for a junior tournament.
WSHU reporter Craig LeMoult was at New Canaan Field Club this past Saturday at the tournament, His piece features bits from interviews with junior participants Harry Colville (Montclair) and Robbie Gavigan (Long Island).

Congratulations to all the new National Champions and finalists!
