Ana Brzova and Viki Stoklasova Repeat Winners at Nationals
March 11, 2014
Pittsburgh, PA
At another glorious Nationals, the women players put on an incredible show. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals all included three-set dogfights. Last year’s champions, Ana Brzova and Viki Stoklasova fought off last year’s finalists Hall-of-Famer Mary Doten and Chelsea Nusslock in a three-set thriller. The drives, blitzes, and quick hands on both sides kept the fans oohing. Keri Flynn and Sue Tarzian played at the top of their game to defeat youngsters Roxy Enica and Martina Ondrejkova in a long two-set match, 6-4, 7-6.
But it was the final that made history. The women split sets, with Flynn and Tarzian bravely pinning Brzova and Stoklasova back on the baseline. The second set was all Ova, as the New Jersey girls worked their paddles like tools. The third set could have gone either way, as they tied at 5-5 and had to win by two games. Eight games later, Brzova and Stoklisova were victorious 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.
Brzova said, “We had a fun and interesting draw this year.” Stoklisova commented, “We had to adjust to each team. Flynn and Tarzian had a strategy and they executed it.”
Thanks to all who played, watched, worked, and to our name sponsor PNC and to all our other sponsors, for creating a super Nationals!
