APTA Men’s 145+ Nationals Kicks Off Four Days of Fabulous Action
March 27, 2013
Sleepy Hollow, NY
Starting on Thursday, March 21, and ending on Friday afternoon, the best elder players from around the country convened under sunny skies and classic platform tennis temperatures for the APTA Men’s 145+ Nationals.
The torch was passed this year, when Mike Hanna and Mike O’Donnell beat out last year’s finalists, Larry Garinger and Blair LeRoy, in the first semifinals, and Roy Anderson and Walt Beatty ousted 2012’s champions Hall-of-Famer Bob Brown and Doug Barrow in the second semis battle. In the final on Friday, Hanna’s wingspan and O’Donnell’s quickness were the difference against much-titled Roy Anderson and Walter Beatty, winning 6-2, 6-2.
(The gold medal count for Hanna and O’Donnell stands at six for Mike O and five for Mike H.)
Beach Kuhl, pictured at right, was given the “Miss Congeniality” award at the 145s dinner. (We have also learned that Kuhl has been elected Mayor or his hometown of Ross, CA. Congratulations, Mr. Mayor.)
Rich Lombard, with an assist by Marjorie “Queen of the Draw” Hodson, put on a great tournament at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, in Scarborough, New York. Thanks to the New York Athletic Club, in Pelham Manor, for hosting the final.
