The Mixed 50+ National Championships was a family affair. Teams of husband and wives, brother and sisters and new partnerships all joined the field. In the end, it was Region III's sister and brother team of Laurie Hissey and Tim McAvoy with the gold medals. Hissey/McAvoy defeated first seeds Andrea Noyes and Mike Gillespie in a snowy, entertaining, high energy (remember it's the 50+) final, 6-4, 6-2. The championship was McAvoy's seventh and Hissey's first!
In the semi-finals, Hissey/McAvoy defeated past champions and second seeds Diane Straus Tucker and Rusty Wright, 6-2, 6-2, and Noyes/Gillespie defeated Sue and Pete Pijawka, 6-3, 6-3, in the Pijawkas’ first Nationals semi-final.
In the playoff for third place, Tucker/Wright defeated the Pijawkas, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
In the Consolation final, Sally and Mark Allen defeated Abigail Burke and Paul Wishnoff, 6-4, 6-3. (Burke/Wishnoff defeated the Allens earlier in the draw by the same score!)
In the Last Chance, Betsy Heidenberger and Tony Ettinger defeated Mary Sturgis and Dan Portnoy, 6-2, 6-4.
Congratulations Tim McAvoy and Laurie Hissey! Thank you to all the players for making the trip to snowy Saucon Valley.
Congratulations to all the winners and finalists!
