Twenty Years of Court the Cure

Started 20 years ago by a small group of breast cancer survivors, Court the Cure’s goal is to raise money and awareness about the disease while providing participants with a non-competitive, fun-filled day of paddle tennis. The funds raised—100% go to North Shore University Health Care, specifically for the Breast Cancer Research program run by Dr. Katharine Yao and her staff. Debi Learner and Liane Joseph are co–chairs of Court the Cure, one of the most enjoyable and meaningful events held in Chicago.

Fourteen clubs throughout the North Shore participated this year: Exmoor in Highland Park, Evanston Golf Club, The Birchwood Club in Highland Park, Knollwood Club, Lake Forest Club, Northmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Tennaqua Swim and Tennis Club in Deerfield, Prairie Club in Glenview, Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield, Valley Lo Club in Glenview, Midtown Bannockburn, and Wilmette Park District.

PRO-AM

Each player in this special event, open to everyone in Series 1 through 5, either brought a pro as a partner or had a pro assigned to her. 12 teams of pros or top players and “amateurs” played in a round robin, including Halle Bodman, Greg O’Neil, Wendy Shpiz, Marina Ohlmuller, Denise Murphy, Robert Stahl, Matt Warner, and Mixed Doubles Nationals champs Alison and Adam Morgan. Robert Stahl from Winnetka Facility and Mike Carrico from Birchwood set up and ran the round-robin tournament.

This was the third year the Winnetka Platform Tennis Club hosted Court for the Cure, and it was a huge success, raising $17,000 while providing a wonderful day of paddle for all. Next September, Winnetka Platform Tennis Club will host this event again, and is already looking forward to continuing its support of this important cause.
