The Greater Boston Open drew a full-capacity crowd to this popular Region II PCQ/NRT on a sunny December Saturday. Fairfield County was well represented in the 32-team draw, especially in the final showdown. Katie Adams and Dana Parsons defeated Viki Stoklosova and Tiernan Cavanna in three sets. The Quarter-Reprieve went to Wendy Yang of Concord and Susan Rudd, who made her annual trip to the GBO from Minnesota. Much thanks to Wendy Yang for once again sourcing our fantastic GBO favors.
While the main draw was dominated by our Connecticut friends, the Boston area gals held fast in the back-draw. Katrina Driscoll (Brookline) and her Duke tennis partner, Kathy Ackerman, won the Consolation. They cruised through the back draw after nearly upsetting the second seed team of Cynthia Dardis and Abigail Burke in the first round (7-6, 6-1). Christie Domoracki and Ellen Cook (Cape Ann area) won the Reprieve, and Shana Roberts and Deb Pruitt (Brookline) won the Last Chance.
Twelve players hailed from the Brookline Paddle Tennis Club, the newest public-access courts in the Boston area. This club was expanded last year with the support of the APTA. The energy and enthusiasm for paddle is growing in the Boston area, and the BPTC is a shining light for the future of the sport in our region.
Caroline McCoy and I want to thank our hut captains, Jim, Debbie, Priscilla, Maureen, Natalie, Kerry, and especially Tona, for their help with making the tournament run so smoothly. Thank you, thank you!
A big shout out to our wonderful Weston Golf Club pro Johan du Randt, who has just become a father to little Johan! Let’s hope late night feedings will not make big Johan too tired to win the men’s Boston tourney on January 24-25. Maybe he’ll have to lean on his partner, Mark Parsons, a little more than usual.
Happy New Year!!
(L to R) Winners Katie Adams/Dana Parsons; Finalists Viki Stoklasova/Tiernan Cavanna
