Green Mountain Open--Three Days of Vermont Fun

Lauren DeLong and Julie Sasner Smith Take Women’s
Ed Hughes and Mike McGraft Win Men’s
On another stellar New England weekend this season, the Green Mountain Open offered three days of platform tennis competition and general entertainment. The Norwich Paddle Club and the new Quechee Club courts hosted. The Quechee hut stands at the bottom of a small ski hill; soon enough players will be clipping out of their skis at the end of the day and jumping on the courts.
Friday, November 7th, a small but driven group from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, and Vermont hit the courts, for the Women’s Open. It was a thankfully overcast day. Lauren DeLong (ME) and Julie Sasner Smith (MA) handled Leslie Haskins (RI) and Kim Mihan (VT) in two sets to win the finals. Asa Nilsson (MA) and Barb Horne (MA) won the quarter reprieve, and Linda Brenske (ME) and Nindy Pike (MA) took home the consolation prize. The renovated Quechee Clubhouse laid out a generous lunch and opened the bar early for a few “bad leavers.”
On Saturday, Mike McGrath and Ed Hughes beat last year’s winners Peter Harvey and Marc Porter. In the semis reprieve, Ken Crothers and John Vogel defeated Chris Stoddard and Marshall Chapin. Todd Tyson and Mike Atkinson defeated local pro Rob Parker and Evin Smith in the consolation round.
A great big thank you to Cadence “Sugar” Generaux, Dave Barlow, and Todd Tyson for running the tournaments, to Steve and Martha Roiter for volunteering their time, and to Rob Parker for using his connections at the clubhouse well. Sweet maple syrup all around!
