The volunteers running the Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care Mixed Platform Tennis Tournament have done it again. The annual Bronxville tournament brought together 52 teams from across Westchester County and Connecticut to raise money for this important organization. The event took place on the brisk weekend of January 31st and February 1st at several area sites, including the Bronxville Village courts, Siwanoy Country Club, Bronxville Field Club, and Fox Meadow Tennis Club.
In the main draw, Judy Arden and Rodrigo Schtscherbyna beat Tina Wein and Terry Doran in a well-attended final match. Elizabeth Lavin and Steve Schwab edged out Diane Greco and her brother, Paul Greco, in the consolation. For the second year in a row, Cammy McFadden and Mike McCann won the main draw reprieve. They beat Lisbet Appel and Dan Portnoy, while Barbara McGraw and Marq Mellor prevailed against finalists Jill Witt and Larry Sturgis in the consolation reprieve.
In addition to the full draw, a fabulous cocktail party with a silent auction was held at the Fox Meadow Tennis Club. There were 35 items in the auction to choose from, with the most popular being two tickets to the 2009 U.S. Golf Open to be played at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. In addition to the 90 sponsors and 20 court sponsors, the lunches, coffee, and breakfast foods were all donated.
Sugar Genereaux, who has been tirelessly running this tournament for 15 years, announced that this was her last year to be in charge, although she will remain active with the organization and tournament. It is estimated that this year’s tournament will raise more than $9,000 for the Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care Program, a provider of compassionate support and services to the terminally ill.
