Lake Forest, IL
Thirty-one teams enjoyed a beautiful day of platform tennis and charity at the recent Lake Forest Open, a Region V women’s NRT/PCQ tournament based on Chicago’s North Shore. The tournament roster included a healthy dose of top-level players, including the 7th-ranked team of Hallie Bodman and Liz Hayward, top points earners Wendy Shpiz, Mary Doten, and many others.
Filling out the large draw were many local tournament regulars and newcomers alike, some who put the top teams to the test and some who simply love the tournament experience and turn back draws into hard fought mini-tournaments of their own. The tournament was won by top-seeded Bodman and Hayward, who defeated Shpiz and Laura Berendt in an exciting final.
The tournament is also a charity that supports the House of Peace Domestic Violence Shelter, which is a haven of healing for the Latina community in Lake County, IL. Six-month residencies in the intimate setting with programs designed to heal and empower encourage transformative personal changes that help spread dignity and courage to the entire community. Since opening their doors in November 2011, The House of Peace Shelter has served 49 women and their 81 children.
