A deep 64 team draw, a break in the snowfall, and a festive party atmosphere all came together on January 8th and 9th for the 44th annual New Jersey State Mixed tournament. Number 2 seeds Steve DeRose and Kerri Delmonico were crowned this year’s champions after besting the number 1 seeded team of John Milbank and Bobo Delaney in a three set final. The draw was especially strong this year with DeRose and Delmonico getting to the final after winning against Anthony Cusimano and Sharon Muller, and Milbank and Delaney reaching the finals by winning over Mike Atkinson and Andrea Noyes. The youthful team of Tyler Gaffney and Lauren Cash had a strong tournament winning the 16 reprieve. 

Orange Lawn, Beacon Hill and Essex Fells all generously contributed courts to the draw with Montclair Golf Club hosting the annual tournament as it has done for the past four decades. Other highlights from the tournament included Saturday Night’s traditional “Locker Room” party with live band, held in MGC’s men’s locker room. A thanks to all of the MGC members who allowed the mixed tournament to take over the locker room, and a special thanks to the few changing members who seemed unaware (or professed to be unaware) of the party’s start time. This year’s tournament filled up very quickly with at least 7 teams on the waiting list so applicants for the 2012 tournament are urged to get their forms in early.
