Fairfield, CT
Over a hundred players ushered in the paddle season in Fairfield County on Saturday at the Paddleplayer.com Open Viking PCQ. Tournament director Maurice Sanchez offers both Open and B draws, attracting top nationally ranked players along with local players seeking some good competition to kick off the season.
In the Women’s Open, Dana Parsons and Annica Van Starrenburg overcame a slow start to defeat Florentina Hanisch and Debora Castany 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 for the title. Parsons and Van Starrenburg earned their spot in the final by beating Molly Brown and Katie Adams, and Hanisch and Castany took out Viki Stoklosova and newcomer Jade Curtis in the other semifinal.
The quarterfinal reprieve winners were Mary Gambale and Lindsey Herchel. Region 2 President’s Cup Captain Sarah Layton liked what she saw. “Mary and Lindsey played a great first round match against seasoned players Katie Adams and Molly Brown. Jade Curtis is new to paddle, but she has some serious speed and great drives off both sides. All three were great new potential President’s Cup Players for Region 2.”
The Women’s B finals were tightly contested, with Cindy Holland and Chandy Smith emerging with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kelly Newton and Lyerly Tuck.
In the Men’s Open, second seeded Mark Parsons and Jeff Morneau made it a clean sweep for the Parsons family, upsetting the top seeded pair of Martin Bostom and Sebastian Bredberg, 7-5, 6-4. In the B tournament, the unseeded duo of David Ascelrod and Craig Waddington took out the third seeded team of Roy Mirchindani and Simon Porter 6-2, 6-3.
