2017 Rochester Men's & Women's Open - Victory for #2 Seeds
October 21, 2017
Rochester, NY
The weather was unseasonably warm in upstate New York for the Rochester Open on Saturday, but the playing conditions led to some fine paddle. In the men’s draw, the second seeds, Roman Stoisavljevic and Louis Volclair, edged out top seeds Andrea Bonfigli and Victor Vidal in a thrilling 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) nailbiter for the championship. In the women’s draw, the second seeded team of Shaheen Bhanji and Lea Morris upset the top seeded Abbey Hand and Amy Heil for the title.
The nice weather made a fun day even better for the fans, who enjoyed the hugely popular afternoon pizza truck and the hometown “vodka wedges,” staying to watch the finals. As always, tournament director Fritz Odenbach and the paddle community in Rochester were excellent hosts, giving both the players and fans a great experience.
There are plenty of paddle events on the schedule for Rochester. Next up are the Autism Up Charity Mixed Event in November (70 teams) and the SIS Charity Breast Cancer Women's Tournament in January (over 100 teams). Rochester paddle and The Shadow Lake Club are already planning and looking forward to the APTA Husband-Wife and Open Mixed in March 2018.
