Shadow Lake Wraps Up 32nd Year of Play
OCTOBER 25, 2010
ROCHESTER, NY
Once again Fritz and Sandra Odenbach set the stage for a fabulous weekend of paddle for locals and out of towners alike.
The weekend began with a Friday night ATPA sponsored clinic and exhibition open to all interested Rochester players. APTA Clinics & Exhibition Committee Chair Juan Martinez Arraya, Anton Mavrin, Patricio Misitrano and Drew Broderick gave clinics to more than 75 people. After the lessons, the four treated the crowd of over 100 to a dazzling display of paddle.
Saturday saw area courts filled with competitors playing in four different tournaments, the Men’s A & B, the Women’s A & B. After hours of play, left standing in the finals of the Men’s A were Mike Stulac and Steve DeRose (winners) and Anton Mavrin and Drew Broderick. The three setter was a phenomenal display of athleticism and anticipation with a lots of power to boot.
In the Men’s B Brett Caroselli and Joe Ryan prevailed in two tough sets against Rich Anderson and Bill Wadsworth.
The Women’s finals featured Pittsburghers Nathalie Lemieux and Kelly Fischer, perennial finalists and New Jerseyians Jill Fehr and Darlene Finnegan. Fehr and Finnegan prevailed in a tough three setter.
The Women’s B tournament was won by Cary Ann Denefrio and Lana Khvalina Ivy in two sets over Maureen Connell and Mimi Hartney.
But wait, the weekend still wasn’t over. Sunday morning the 4 intrepid pros came out again to teach another 50 new APTA members. By Sunday evening the organizers and the pros could barely talk but nonetheless surely felt a great sense of accomplishment of sharing their love of platform tennis with so many people. Thanks again to Fritz, Sandra, Juan, Anton, Patricio and Drew for their time and effort. Thanks also to Shadow Lake Golf & Racquet Club and Cobblestone Capital Advisors for their generous sponsorship.
