York Paddle Tennis Club, Arundel Paddle Tennis Club, and the Wentworth-by-the-Sea Country Club hosted the first Seacoast Platform Tennis Invitational on March 22rd and 23rd. All clubs, located in Southern Maine and the seacoast of New Hampshire, drew teams from as far as Bar Harbor and the Greater Boston area, along with many local teams. Clubs represented were Brae Burn CC, Longwood CC, Concord CC, Turner Hill CC, Gilfoy Paddle Club, Eastern Yacht Club, Southwest Harbor Club, Arundel Paddle Club, and York Paddle Club.
The women's tournament was held all day Saturday at Wentworth and started with a round robin format, grouped into the Lobsters and the Chowders. The Chowder winners, Kerry Alvino and her 16-year-old daughter, Molly, took on the Lobster winners, Linda Brenske and Nindy Pike. Young Alvino, a squash and tennis player, showed the rest of us what natural talent looks like, playing in her first paddle tournament. She and her mom won the tournament in a 10 point tie-breaker after splitting sets. At 8-2, Pike single-handedly blew the lead and congratulated the Alvinos on their comeback.
Meanwhile, the men's tournament was played both at the Arundel Club and York. The Allen brothers, James and Andrew, from Kinfolk Paddle Club in Southwest Harbor, Maine, defeated John Sheehan and Eric Nixon from Arundel. The consolation round was won by Stan Mescon from Longwood Cricket Club and Mike Hardcastle from York.
On Sunday, ten teams dueled for the Mixed Double's Championship title. A ton of great paddle was played and, in the finals, York’s Linda Brenske and Rob Pease defeated Brae Burn legends Judy and Don Helm.
A great big thanks to the generous sponsorship of People’s United Bank Wealth Management. Thanks also to Dan McCormick, Tournament Chair, and Greg Campbell, Megan Shapiro-Ross, Don Booth and Rob Pease for their organizational acumen.
The Seacoast Platform Tennis Invitational intends to host the second annual tournament this October 2014. Stay tuned for details and plan your trip to Maine this fall.
