Wild Weather at The Shore Cure
NOVEMBER 9, 2011
MIDDLETOWN, NJ
On the first day of the second annual Shore Cure, 20 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams braved heavy rain and got in a few rounds until lightning stopped play.
Chairs Nathan and Jessica LeFevre signed on a great group of top-ranked pros to play under the lights, but no one knew what they had REALLY signed up for. A few players couldn’t make it due to the severe weather, so some teams were realigned. The hardy pros played in mix of snow and rain that was blowing sideways. While over 100 viewers watched from the warming hut and party tent at Navesink Country Club, newly partnered Mike Stulac and Chris Gambino won over Peter Berka and Drew Eberly in the final, 6-2, 6-3.
After a night of heavy snow, power outages and fallen trees, the rest of the tournament was played on a strangely beautiful day. As Nathan LeFevre said, “After playing in Saturday conditions, it was like playing indoors!” Because the tournament went an extra day, Kerri Delmonico and Maria Manley became storm-made partners. They beat Jessica LeFevre and Joanne O’Shaughnessy in the final match, 6-4, 6-4.
The men’s teams stayed paired as originally planned, and the #1 seeded team of Walter O’Connor and Todd Axt won over #2 seed Joe Duddy and Brian Duddy, 6-4, 6-0.
This dedicated, weather-blind group of players and supporters raised over $20,000 for two cancer charities created to honor former paddle players, Diney Goldsmith and Crissy Miele. For more information, see the Cancer Support Community (The Diney Goldsmith Center) and the Cristine Meredith Miele Foundation.
