Forty-four teams played at the Whitford Country Club in Exton, Pennsylvania. The Whitford Open tournament donates all proceeds to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
For the women’s finals, Mandy Odenbach and Ali Tross defeated Laurie Hissey and newcomer Tracy Wing in straight sets. Odenbach and Tross were the first team to figure out a way to deal with Wing's tough two-handed backhand.
On the men's side, there were four standout teams as both semi-final matches came down to a third set tie-breaker. In one of the semi-final matches, Hall-of-Famer Tim McAvoy and son Tommy battled nephew/cousin David Hissey and Bob Bolling. Hissey and Bolling prevailed 10-8 in a tie-breaker in the third set! In the finals, after surviving against Matt Kochis and Dick Dunkel in the semis, the team of Jeff Lyon and Rodney Stewart stood out from the pack beating Hissey and Bolling, 6-4, 6-2, in the last match of the day.
