Wee Burn Country Club in Darien, CT hosted the 3rd Annual Callaway Cup this past Saturday, October 4th. Not even a driving rain storm could stop the enthusiastic 16 team men’s and women’s draws from battling it out in one of the first tournaments of the year. Hall-of-Famer Bob Callaway himself was there to take in all the fun and keep the player’s spirits high. Conditions were extremely tough, but players found refuge from the rain in Wee Burn’s beautiful new platform tennis facility.
Carrie Rabuse and Wee Burn member Katie Adams repeated with their second Callaway Cup win beating Wee Burn’s Tiernan Cavanna and partner Tina Wein in a long women’s final that saw many lead changes. The match went three sets with Adams/Rabuse prevailing 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-3. A very solid women’s draw with some talented local players made for a great day of paddle. A nationally ranked team from Boston even made the trek down to Darien to get some practice.
The men’s draw featured players from Westchester and Connecticut. The top seeds from Wee Burn, Bryan Kelley and David Gedney, advanced to the final after closing out tight sets in early rounds. On the bottom half of the draw, Rowayton’s duo of Mike Lawton and Troy Pinto needed three sets to dispatch the opposition in the quarter and semifinal rounds. In the final, Kelley/Gedney repeated their success from two years ago, prevailing over Lawton/Pinto and tough conditions to claim the championship, 6-3, 6-2. .
Despite the wet conditions, everyone seemed genuinely cheerful and many friends of Bob came out to lend their support and catch up. Looking forward to next year and the 4th Annual Callaway Cup with hopefully no rain in the forecast!
