Amy Shay and Susan Tarzian Tops at Women's 45+ Nationals

Women’s 45+
Until now, the same team has won the APTA Women’s 45+ Nationals every year. Since its inception in 2013, Cynthia Dardis and Amy Shay have claimed each and every title. This year, however, Dardis was sidelined with a season-ending shoulder injury, ensuring a new championship team. Although she almost never plays with a partner other than Dardis, Shay teamed up with Sue Tarzian in Dardis’ absence, and came away with another title.

Tarzian/Shay met little resistance in their four-match run to the title. In the semifinals, they beat the fourth seeds, Nancy Budde and Bobo Delaney, losing only two games. The other semifinal match was a battle, with the second seeds, Kerri Delmonico and Cindy Prendergast getting past the third seeds, Jill Feher and Judy Takach, in three sets. The final was all Tarzian/Shay, who lost only three games to Delmonico/Prendergast. This marked the third year in a row Delmonico/Prendergast reached the finals, and the seventh year in a row Shay claimed the title. This is Tarzian’s second Masters Championship; she teamed with Dardis to win the 50+ title in 2015.

Women’s 60+
After losing in the semifinals of the 45+ tournament, Budde/Delaney came back the next day as the top seeded team in the 60+ event. This time, they came away with the title, beating Elizabeth Allen/Anne Marie Fallek in the semifinals and Kim Alicknavitch/Carol Taylor in the finals. This is Delaney’s first 60+ title and 12th Masters title (six-time 40+ National Champion and five-time 50+ National Champion.) This is Budde’s second Masters Championship after winning the 50+ crown in 2008.
