2017 Boston Open Men’s Preview

The Boston Open men’s draw is loaded, with every one of the top 13 teams entered except for top-ranked Drew Broderick and Jared Palmer. Mark Parsons (coming off a win at The Midwesterns with Steve DeRose) and Johan du Randt are the top seeds and the big favorites in Boston, but there is no shortage of excellent teams looking to challenge them.

The second seeds, Juan Arraya and Jeff Morneau, have had a terrific season, steadily moving up the rankings to take their current place behind only Broderick/Palmer and du Randt/Parsons. Finalists at The Midwesterns less than two weeks ago, Arraya/Morneau will look to repeat or better that result in Boston.

Third seeded John Hughes and Mark Powers didn’t play in Cincinnati, but they have played consistently well this season, reaching the semifinals at Western New England, Chicago Charities, and Patterson. Rounding out the top four seeds are Marek Czerwinski and Hall-of-Famer Chris Gambino, who upset the third seeds Martin Bostrom and Sebastian Bredberg in Cincinnati before falling to DeRose and Parsons in the semis.

The teams seeded five through eight have had very little to differentiate them in the rankings this year, with less than ten points separating the fifth seeded Max LePivert and George Wilkinson from the eighth seeded Mikk Irdoja and Dan Regan. In the middle are sixth seeded Scott Kahler and Casey Watt, who beat LePivert and Wilkinson to reach The Midwesterns’ semifinals, and seventh seeded Martin Bostrom and Sebastian Bredberg.

Because almost all of the top teams are competing, many teams who are usually seeded will be floating dangerously in the draw.  Steve DeRose is playing with his regular partner Jon Lubow. Ryan Baxter/Ricky Heath and Scott Falatek/Vlatko Najdek are established teams who are always tough. Alex Bancila and Marco Grangeiro beat Todd Hiscox and Patricio Misitrano 7-5 in the third in Cincinnati’s third round, and both will be looking to wreak havoc on the draw in Boston. Anton Bobytski and Bernard Schoeman showed they are a team to contend with when they beat Bostrom and Bredberg in the quarters of the Duane Hayden Long Island Invitational, and time will tell when former ATP doubles star Eric Butorac, teaming with Anton Mavrin, will make his mark on the APTA tour.

There is a lot on the line in Boston, including prize money. Plus, Boston and the Grand Prix at Short Hills are the last opportunities to accumulate points before Nationals.
