Kallie and Scott Hapgood Snow ‘Em at CT State Mixed

This year’s Connecticut State Mixed took place in typical conditions: a snowstorm. From the time the first ball was struck at 10:30 AM to the final point of the tournament at 8:30 PM, it was snowing.

Starting in the quarterfinals, first seeds Katie Adams and Maurice Sanchez had to come up with some magic late in the third set to dispatch newcomers, Morgan Melnikoff and Geoff LoConte 6-4 in the third. Marc Powers and his mum Denise Giordano struggled with the conditions but eventually beat the Muellers, 7-6, 6.2.

On the bottom half of the draw, the Swetts advanced comfortably against third seeds Shana Roberts and Nate deKanter, while second seeds Kallie and Scott Hapgood beat Fiona Andren and Bennett Trembicki in two sets in an entertaining match. 

In the semifinals, Giordano and Powers outlasted Sanchez and Adams, 6-4 in the third in a match that had it all: blitzes, spin shots, and huge drives. The Hapgoods continued their steady play and dominance at net with a straight set victory over the Swetts. 

As for the finals, the Hapgoods proved to be too much for Giordano and Powers. Kallie’s consistent backcourt play and Scott’s net coverage overwhelmed the duo, though they played a great match with Denise hitting terrific lobs and setting up Marc for big drives but in the end the Hapgoods won the match, 6-3, 6-2.
