Warm Hearts in the Windy City – Chicago Charities Tournament

Good will and great paddle were the highlights of a long, warm weekend on Lake Michigan. Hall-of-Famers and former national champions dotted the draw sheets on both the men’s and women’s side.

The women’s tournament finished first, with the finals played at the Glen View Club. Cynthia Dardis and Amy Shay of Connecticut were victorious over Lauren Mandell and Gerri Viant of New York, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. This was the only match in which Dardis/Shay lost a set. Unfortunately, on Saturday the men had to cope with awful paddle conditions, blinding sun. (The fans, however, loved it.) The Sunday semi-finals and finals were graced with overcast skies but the athletes had to contend with that famous Chicago wind. Power and pride factored heavily in Drew Broderick’s and Chris Gambino’s win over Mark Parsons and Mike Stulac. The #2 seed withstood a wearing first set, which took over an hour to play, but won the next two to beat out the #1 seeded team, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
And not only did tournament chair John Noble put together a fabulous event, he and partner Rod Workman won the men’s 90+ event, played at the Exmoor Club.
The House of Peace Shelter was the beneficiary of this year’s Chicago Charities tournament. Created as a safe haven for women and children from the Latino community, this charity was brought to the paddle community’s attention by players Denise Murphy and Julia Sierks.
