Denver Dominates at the 7th Annual Colorado Border War

This was a big year for the Colorado Border War between the Denver & Boulder Platform communities.  Boulder was coming into the event with a lead in the overall championship count, but all the momentum was with the Denver team after having won the previous two years.  

Denver’s team, always being the gentleman that they are, agreed to a format change, moving the event from the traditional “Friday Night Lights” meeting to a Saturday event.  Boulder had hoped they could arrive fresh and better ready to roll by avoiding the rush hour commute to the lush grounds of the Arapaho Tennis Club.  With this competition having been decided by the narrowest of margins in the past, it was thought that even the smallest of details could make the difference.

However, this year, the smallest of details would not come into play, as the war was more of a massacre.  Denver brought the heat out of the gates and swept the first round with Boulder only winning on a single set across 7 matches. With pride still on the line, Boulder was able to “win” the second round by a 1 set margin, but it was way too little, too late.  Denver simply coasted to the most lopsided victory in the history of the event. 

Good cheer was to be had in the clubhouse as the Sapporo cup was presented to Denver.  Meanwhile, the Boulder team remained late into the evening, draining the keg and working on their strategy for the next meeting.  Since the author of this article is a proud member of the Boulder team, the recruiting starts now...if you are a top player and you went to CU, lived in Boulder, or even visited our fine city once, please reach out via www.boulderpaddle.com  as we might just have a plane ticket with your name on it for next year!

Denver could pull even in the 2017 meeting, as a win would tie the series at 4-4.  Until then, there will be plenty of grudge matches with the Boulder Open, State Open, Arapahoe Invitational and Boulder Invitational tournaments on the horizon. Yes, Platform Tennis is alive and well in Colorado, so come join us for one of these events!
