2007 Delaware States
KEITH STUDNICK and VLATKO NAJDEK
NOVEMBER 10, 2007
WILMINGTON, DE
With numerous President Cup points on the line, sixteen of the top Teams from both the Northern and Southern sections of Region III traveled to the Wilmington area to compete in the Delaware States hosted by none other than Steve Nycum at the remarkable Greenville Country Club, in Wilmington, Delaware. This was the first of six Region III PCQ men's tournaments that will be held this season.
The day began with a startling upset as the newly formed team of Bruce Sopko and Drew Friel took down the perennial President's Cup team of Andrew Hocker and Steve Reineger. After losing the tie-breaker in the first set, they went on to win the next two sets 6-0 and 6-4. Sopko and Friel did not end their day there as they knocked off the red hot team of Simon Pepiatt and Greg Eger in the fifth place play-off 6-2, 7-5. Great playing boys!
The match of the day pitted two of Philly's finest teams of Vlatko Najdek and Andrew Sorentino coming back from four match points down in the second set tie breaker to defeat the team of Bruce Redpath and Larry Hyde in a three set thriller. The final score was 6-7, 7-6, and 6-2. Najdek and Sorrentino defeated the #2 seeded team of Scott Freund and Fred Gumbinner in their semi finals match 6-4, 6-1.
The other semi- finals pitted the #1 seeds Todd Marvin and Scott Falatek against the always dangerous fourth seeded team of Jeff Lyon and Ted Easter. Team Falatek and Marvin displayed on the court all the reasons for their number one seed by making a great comeback after losing the first set to set up a revenge match from last season.
For the spectators that remained to watch the finals, team Falatek and Marvin took the Championship 4 & 1 over Najdek and Sorrentino in rather decisive fashion.
Special thanks to Steve Nycum for hosting the event as all of the players had a great time hanging at Greenville Country Club, one of the premier paddle facilities you will find anywhere.
