Deep Draw at Delaware State Men’s PCQ/NRT

Hosted at Greenville Country Club, a 32-team Delaware States had one of its deepest regional draws in recent memory. The seeds were set and the draw was pulled only to see some very tough round of 16’s battle it out. Tthe first upset coming from returning player Steve Beers and partner Matt Kochis, who took out the 5th seed to set-up a quarter-finals against 2nd seeds Tommy Croker and Juan Jaysingh.

The round of 8 saw some of the most compelling, long, and competitive matches. Steve Reiniger and Andrew Hocker defeated long-time rivals Simon Peppiatt and Greg Eger, 6-4, 7-5 in a 2 ½ hour marathon. On the court next to them, Mark Holtschneider and partner Ted Easter lost in a tight 3-setter to Clevelanders Todd Wojtowski and Eric Miller. The 2009 Champions Scott Freund and Trevor Spracklin from Washington took down Reiniger and Hocker, 6-4, 7-5 to set up a final against 2010 Champion Croker and Jaysingh, who eked past the Cleveland boys in another thrilling match.

It was Jaysingh’s day.  He was on!  As Croker put it, “He could not miss if he tried.” That was also reiterated by their opponents in the final. Congratulations.

Finally the day was at an end with the last 12 beat up, tired, sore, but still energetic gents from Cleveland, Delaware, Washington, Virginia, Maryland, and Philadelphia toasting glasses of wine and mugs of beer, finishing off the great spread that Greenville Country Club once again provided, and talking of the camaraderie in the game of paddle. It must be noted that there was discussion about the photo of 2009 Champions Freund and Spracklin and finalists Reiniger and Hocker. It may need to be taken off the wall and replaced by a profile photo of Jaysingh holding his newly inked plastic 20-ounce Champions Cup!
