Jeronie Barnes’ Journey from Mid-Flight Faceplant to Winner’s Circle

February 22, 2016
Arapahoe, CO

ChampsJeronie Barnes and Dane Schmidgall won the Arapahoe Men's NRT/Viking PCQ. Barnes shares his own version of this athletic and medical miracle. (Pictured at right, l-r, Schmidgall & Barnes)

“On the flight to Denver, I wasn't feeling well (possible elevation sickness) and while on an attempted trip to the plane's restroom, I passed out. I face-planted in the aisle (nice bloody nose and sore face) and was lucky that a trained nurse and military medic were on the plane. They took fantastic care of me, administered an IV during the end of the flight, and got me safely into the hands of the Denver emergency response team as soon as we landed. They did an EKG and suggested I go straight to the emergency room for further testing. I refused as I knew this could result in us not getting a chance to play in the tournament. My wife and mom are going to kill me, but it was well worth it for the W! For The Love Of Paddle…! It was one of my dumber decisions but prouder accomplishments!”

We applaud “The Future” for his dedication to the game (although we don’t recommend it to others), and his partner for believing that he would not face-plant again—this time on the court.
