Gretchen Biggs and Heather Mahan Eke Out Final at Oden Cox

A small but talented group played at the courts at Shelter Harbor Inn, owned by paddle enthusiast Jim Dey. Tournament director Leslie Haskins operated her usual casual, fun tournament, using the new courts at Stonington COMO in Connecticut as the second group of courts. New teams from the Boston area, as well as a twosome from Maine made the trip.  The day was warm with sporadic sunshine that always came out just in time for the other team’s serve. The afternoon had a little chill in the air. The dining room at the inn was cozy and the food as usual was far above standard grade.

The final was a dogfight; Gretchen Biggs and Heather Mahan squeaked by last year’s champions, Lynn House and Julie Kennedy, 7-6, 7-5.

In the Consolation round, Mother/daughter team of Cathy and Lindsey Herchel dropped a tight one to Mainers Linda Brenske and Megan Shapiro-Ross, 7-5, 6-4.  Katie Martin and Julie Sasner easily won in the Consolation Reprieve, after losing two close morning matches.
