Colville and DelDuca take Island B Women’s

The third annual Island B Women’s tournament in Rhode Island was a resounding success. Under clear blue skies and 40 degree temperatures teams from as far away as New Jersey, New York City and Central Massachusetts traveled to scenic Jamestown and Newport to compete.  This year saw increased participation from players from the Ocean State. 

Spectators were treated to a marathon semi-final where the newly formed team of Heather Mahan and Andrea Goff (RI) pushed Jen Colville and Elizabeth DelDuca (NY) (pictured above right) to three sets, displaying teamwork, patience and long grueling rallies.  Colville and DelDuca prevailed 6/7, 6/2, 7/5, then rested for 15 minutes before stepping out on court again to take on Jill Rodday and Vivi Duke (MA) in the Championship match.  Rodday and Duke displayed great teamwork with long rallies, though Colville and DelDuca edged past them to win 7/6, 7/5 returning to New York as the Island B Women’s 2012 Champions.  The first match started at 8:30 AM and the last concluded at 7:00 PM (under the stars).

The Island B Women’s has become a favorite for many, and tournament organizers Mary Hutchinson and Amy Smith do a terrific job. This weekend in March has also become popular for couples since the Island B Men’s is held the following day.   As one of the players noted, “I just wanted to thank you both for a really fun time last Saturday. Everything was great - the paddle, the people, the food, the wine and chocolate :)   It was my partner's first tournament and we both had a great time. Thank you so much for organizing.”
