2016 Lake Invitational Recap

October 17, 2016
Franklin Lakes, NJ

On a beautiful day at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes, NJ, the top seeded team of Cynthia Dardis and Amy Shay defeated Debora Castany and Florentina Hanisch, 6-2, 6-4, to take the title. Although the champions dismissed the finalists and their semifinal opponents, Liz Jaffe and Dana Parsons, in straight sets, they had quite a scare earlier in the tournament. “Our quarterfinal match against Maria Manley and Pam Ruoff was really tough,” Dardis explained of the 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory. “After that, the sun was an issue in the semis and finals. It really came down to consistency in those matches.”

The #2 seeds, Liz Cruz and Roxy Enica, ended up in a quarterfinal struggle against unseeded Castany and Hanisch, but unlike Dardis and Shay, they failed to escape, losing 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5). Castany said, “Something clicked in that match. Flor and I trusted each other and believed we could get a big win.” Avoiding the letdown that sometimes follows an upset, Castany and Hanisch took out the #4 seeded team of Kerri Flynn and Myrthe Molenveld, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. Although Dardis and Shay ended the dream run of the unseeded team in the finals, Castany and Hanisch gave notice that they are yet another force to be reckoned with on the women’s APTA tour this season.

Thank you to Tournament Director Ana Brzova for running a great tournament and the Indian Trail Club for providing their facilities. Special thanks to Viking for sponsoring all APTA PCQ tournaments this year.
