Martina Ondrejkova and Ana Zubori Float to the Top at Lake Invitational

The draw was small but potent at this year’s Lake Invitational, with two hot teams on a collision course to meet in the finals. Before the anticipated final round matchup, however, top-seeded Kerri Delmonico and Myrthe Molenveld, who tore through last week’s Connecticut Open without losing a set, and second-seeded Martina Ondrejkova and Ana Zubori had to face down some tough competition.

In one semifinal, Delmonico/Molenveld struggled to beat Hall of Famer Bobo Delaney and Tonia Mangan 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Delaney/Mangan, known for their long, close matches, played tiebreak sets in each of their three matches, but could not win the one to extend their semifinal match to a third set. In the other semi, Cooey Lyon and Charlotte Sikora did manage to take the second set against Ondrejkova/Zubori before losing in three.

Ondrejkova/Zubori have been improving as a team with each tournament this year, and they exhibited their upgraded play in the final, beating Delmonico/Molenveld, 6-2, 6-3.

Tournament director Ana Brzova and the staff at the Indian Trail Club always run a great tournament, but this year they had quite a treat for the players. After each match, the players had a 15 minute session with a massage therapist. After a long day of paddle, especially in the rain, what could be better!
