Jade Curtis and Viki Stoklasova First at Long Island NRT/PCQ

There were quite a few legitimate contenders at the outset of the 2018 Long Island Women’s Invitational NRT/Viking PCQ. Five teams boasted excellent results already in 2018: top seeds Florentina Hanisch/Annica van Starrenburg won the Philly Open, Laura Berendt/Roxy Enica (3) took the title at Chicago Charities, Jade Curtis/Viktoria Stoklasova (4) were the victors at the Connecticut Classic, unseeded Kerri Delmonico/Lauren Gebbia claimed the Lake Invitational, and Liz Cruz/Mirian Warner (2) reached the semis or finals of the three tournaments they played together this season. The odds favored one of these teams winning in Long Island, but which one?

In an excellent, extremely close quarterfinal battle, Delmonico/Gebbia upset Hanisch/van Starrenburg, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Berendt/Enica, Curtis/Stoklasova, and Cruz/Warner all had an easier time in their quarterfinal encounters, scoring straight set wins. Both semifinals were also straight-setters, with Curtis/Stoklasova coming back from behind in both sets to edge out Delmonico/Gebbia, 7-5, 7-6, and Berendt/Enica taking out Cruz/Warner, 6-3, 6-3.

The score in the final says it all. Berendt/Enica used their power game to overwhelm Curtis/Stoklasova in the first set, but weren’t able to keep up their domination as their opponents figured out how to diffuse the onslaught. Curtis/Stoklasova had to work hard for their 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 win, but they emerged as the 2018 Long Island Women’s Invitational Champions.
