There were some early upsets at the Duane Hayden Men’s Long Island Invitational, with the top two seeded teams bowing out in the quarterfinals. This paved the way for the third seeds, Marco Grangiero and Nathan LeFevre, and the fourth seeds, Mikk Irdoja and Dan Regan, to reach the finals, with Irdoja and Regan taking home the trophy 6-4, 6-2.

The tournament began according to form, with all of the eight seeded teams winning their first two rounds to reach the quarterfinals. In the quarters, the top seeds Martin Bostrom and Sebastian Bredberg got off to a quick start, taking the first set from the fifth seeded Anton Bobytskyi and Bernard Schoeman, 6-2. Bobytskyi and Schoeman didn’t go away, however, and took the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 to book a spot in the semifinals. A similar scenario unfolded on the bottom of the draw, when the second seeds Steve DeRose and Jon Lubow lost in three sets to Juan Arraya and Javier Ferrin-Kranewitter.

The third and fourth seeded teams didn’t succumb to the quarterfinal upset bug; both Grangeiro/LeFevre and Irdoja/Regan reached the semifinals with straight set wins.

Both semifinal matches went the distance. Grangeiro/LeFevre beat Bobytskyi/Schoeman in a long, tight three-setter, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, and Irdoja/Regan won an up-and-down contest against Arraya/Ferrin-Kranewitter 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

The first set of the finals was tight all the way through. Regan noted, “we played a really good game at 5-4 and that got us through the first set. That was huge because when we played Marco in the Altantic Classic we lost a lot of games that we were ahead in.” Throughout the match, Regan was able to come into the net behind Irdoja’s huge forehand and take control of the points. Following up their unseeded run to the finals at the Atlantic Classic with their win here, Irdoja and Regan are quickly moving into the upper echelon of the men’s game.

Thank you to tournament director Duane Hayden and the Nassau Country Club.
