2020 Duane Hayden Long Island Men's Grand Prix Final Results (doc) (pdf)

After being postponed once for a mighty rainstorm, the Duane Hayden Long Island Invitational Grand Prix took place on Saturday, just after the East Coast was blanketed in a foot of snow. The 16 teams who competed had the benefit of decently warm winter temperatures. With four of the top five and seven of the top eleven ranked teams signed up, there were many heated contests.

QUARTERFINAL/SEMIFINAL

The first round went well for the higher seeds, all decisive two setters. The quarterfinals were tighter, especially Juan Arraya and Mark Parsons versus Martin Bostrom and Drew Broderick battling for the match tiebreaker (in lieu of a third set). Bostrom/Broderick kept to high-percentage paddle for the win. In the other matches, John Hughes and Marc Powers (2) got the breaks needed over Chris Humphreys and Nathan LeFevre; Sven Burus and Mikk Irdoja held off Max LePivert and Anton Protsenko; and Johan du Randt and Stephen Mitchell (1) defeated Scott Kahler and Filip Rams in two sets.

In the semis, Hughes/Powers were locked in. While Burus/Irdoja played well against them, they couldn’t combat the one-two punch of Hughes/Power at 6-4, 6-1. The other semifinal featured momentum swings and chances for top-seeds du Randt/Mitchell but the energy they showed in the first set was missing in the second set as Bostrom/Broderick picked their spots carefully. The third set went to the steadier team of Bostrom/Broderick at 6-4.

FINALS

Broderick is known for his preternatural calm and ability to make it look easy, while Bostrom is on everyone’s list of the guy who should win a Nationals soon. This was their third tournament as a pair this year, and their strategy worked in many situations. Hughes/Powers, however, used their confidence, incredible fitness, and ability to overcome small momentum shifts within games to win a riveting final, 6-1, 6-4.
