2021 Rochester Open Men's Final Results (doc)(pdf)

Early on, the men’s draw lost one of the teams expected to make some noise when Josep Baro and John Cassas lost in the first round and, due to injury, were unable to continue. Current APTA Junior 15 and under Champion Cooper Friday and his partner John Kilmer won their first match but ran into the wall known as Juan Arraya (2019 National Champion) and his partner Patricio Misitrano in the second round. The semifinals sort of did and sort of didn’t go as expected. Arraya/Misitrano, everyone’s betting favorite (if paddle players did such a thing), lost in two sets to underdogs Andrew Ong and Tom Wiese from Pittsburgh. Ong’s flashy play rivaled Arraya’s and Wiese’s steady and strong play propelled them into the finals. Number two seeds Dan Hansen of Mystic, CT, and Ilya Levin of Boston made it to the finals by straight setting Nathan Gambino and Doug Morrow of Philadelphia in the semis. Ong/Wiese proved a bit too strong for Hansen/Levin and took the Rochester crown back to Pittsburgh.

Many thanks to Tournament Director Mandy Newell and Hut Commander extraordinaire Fritz Odenbach for another wonderful Rochester tournament. Clearly the future of the Rochester tournament is in great hands. Thanks to host club Shadow Lake Golf and Racquet Club and Midtown Athletic Club, the staff and volunteers, and to all the players for competing well.
