Cartier/Godiksen Capture The Men’s Shoreline Classic, Rabuse/Montalbano Repeat At The Mixed

The status of the 2016 Shoreline Classic was up in the air for the majority of February and March. Jim Dey, Shelter Harbor Inn owner of 40 years, was forced to close the Inn mid-February due to a pipe burst in the main building. With the tournament looming, Jim worked very hard to ensure he would have the Inn open for the weekend. Without Jim’s efforts, the tournament couldn’t have happened, so we all owe him a big thanks.

Playing conditions were not so pleasant throughout the weekend. On Saturday, for the men’s tournament, seventeen teams showed for a day of rainy paddle. Most matches were a test of which team knew how to play skip-ball the best. Fortunately, the rain cleared for the finals, in which Geoff Cartier and Steve Godiksen took down Peter Harvey and Nick Raho 6-1, 6-3.

Men's Draw 

Conditions arguably worsened for the mixed tournament on Sunday. With snow coming down heavily, the eighteen team draw had a delayed start due to one of the sites not having heaters. Thankfully the snow cleared by noon, and was replaced by heavy winds and spurts of hail (not sure if it was any better, you decide). Despite the tricky conditions, teams were patient and made the best of tough paddle weather. Top seed Carrie Rabuse and Michael ‘Monte’ Montalbano beat Candice Leonard and hall of famer Mike Gillespie 6-1, 6-1 in the final.
