Broderick and Palmer Grab Victory at Short Hills over Arraya and LePivert.
February 6, 2015
Short Hills, NJ
In a tight three setter local favorite Drew Broderick and partner Jared Palmer defeated Connecticut pros and number 2 seeds, Juan Arraya and Max LePivert. The final was an amazing exhibition of shot making and athleticism leaving spectators gasping in amazement at Arraya’s drop shots, Palmer’s volleys, LePivert’s quickness and Broderick’s savy. One spectator commented that no one should have to lose this match. The semi’s were also a treat for spectators with a unseeded team from Chicago Adam Morgan and Dane Schmidgall falling to Arraya and LePivert. The other semi featured the # 5 ranked team of Marco Grangeiro and George Wilkinson against Broderick and Palmer.
On the women’s side, Ana Brzova and Viki Stoklasova reestablished their dominance over the rest of the women’s tour. They took out Lauren Gebbia and former national champ Kerri Delmonico 6-2, 6-3. Gebbia who is known as a big hitter off both sides could not penetrate the wall at the net created by Brzova and Stoklasova. Delmonico for all her tactical savy couldn’t figure out a way to breakdown the 2 time defending national champions.
The women’s semi’s also included a Chicago team, Jane McNitt and Wendy Shpiz whose last visit to the East Coast saw them reach the finals of Long Island. McNitt and Shpiz like so many others fell to the brilliance of Brzova and Stoklasova. Unseeded Liz Cruz and Gabby Niculescu lost to Gebbia and Delmonico in the other semi.
Thanks to Dave Broderick and the Short Hills Committee for another excellent tournament. Five events were run simultaneously, Men’s and Women’s Ranking and Men’s and Women’s B and Men’s 95s More than 300 players enjoyed the cold and cloudy weather and warm hospitality in New Jersey.
