Men’s Open Championship NRT/Viking PCQ

Edwin Lewis and Scott Triplett came into St. Louis as the third seed among 32 teams who were all playing as if inspired to win a Stanley Cup. Oh yeah, STL Blues, Stanley Cup Champions! All four seeds cruised into the semifinals where they battled for a place in the finals. Lewis/Triplett squared off against the Kansas City team of Graham Battle and Garret Gates (2). Battle/Gates looked to take control of the match after dropping the first set by winning the second set 6-2. The third seeds raised their game to another gear and took the third. Mike Marino and Matt Wierzel (4) brought their A game to defeat the first seeds, local pro Peter Hantack and Paulo Gonzalez, in another three-set thriller. Hantack/Gonzalez won the first set but were just not able to hang with the team from Chicago.

The finals featured the third and fourth seeds and they put on a show for the St. Louis crowd. Lewis/Triplett prevailed in a three-set match but Marino/Wierzel gave them everything they had at 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. Congratulations to Edwin Lewis and Scott Triplett as 2020 STL Invitational Champions.

Dick Baldwin Invitational 110+s

The weekend started with the STL Platform Dick Baldwin 110+ event. Play began Friday afternoon with the toughest draw we have seen in years. Defending champions Peter Hantack and Dick Baldwin, who turned 80 this week, worked their way through the draw to the finals where they were defeated by Frank Childress and Frank Sant, 3-6. 6-3. 6-1. We all hope to be playing half as well as Dick does at 80.

Saturday Night Party - Ping Pong Beer Pong

In a new event this year at the Saturday night paddle party, the team of Garret Gates and Graham Battle needed three overtimes to win the first Ping Pong Beer Pong Championship. It was a great night with amazing food and games.

It was a phenomenal weekend of paddle in St. Louis and we wish everyone all the best of luck in the remaining season. Play hard and have fun!

The APTA would like to thank Tournament Director Alan Douglas for putting on an excellent event.
