2019 Wellesley Weekend Warrior
L to R Finalists Chris Weiss/Louis Crose; Winners Chris Jeffrey/Csaba
Pazmany
Warriors from all over New England ascended on Boston to compete in the second annual Wellesley Weekend Warrior paddle tournament. Winter Storm Scott relentlessly dropped snow on the tournament sites throughout the day, which made for challenging paddle conditions. The court heaters were humming as the players battled at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton, Massachusetts and Wellesley Country Club.

Early on you could tell that the tournament was going to have its fair share of drama when the defending champs, father/son team Bill and Ben Davis, lost to Nathaniel Mason and Remington Pope, 6-2, 6-2. The father/ son duo regrouped and produced two strong performances in the quarter reprieve draw and beat Matt Nazarenko and Ted Danglemeyer in the finals.

The men from Maine, John Sheehan and Rob Breed, trekked a long distance to compete among Boston’s best and lost a tight three-setter in the semis to eventual champs Chris Jeffrey and Csaba Pazmany. On the top half of the draw, the fourth seed Chris Weiss and Louis Crose got on an early roll and defeated Mason/Pope to gain entry into the finals. In the consolation bracket, Barry Nectow and Brian Henry won an exciting battle against the hometown warriors John Murray and Mark Lund.

A quick lunch break provided by the legendary Linden Deli ensured that the Warriors were well fed and hydrated before the all-Brookline Paddle Club final. In the end, Jeffrey/Pazmany had too much fire power off the deck and beat their comrades Chris Weiss and Louis Crose, 6-2, 6-1, to take home the coveted Yeti cup.

The APTA and GBPTA thanks Tournament Director David McNaughton and all the volunteers who made this tournament run smoothly with excessive fun as well.
