Kelly Fischer/Jessica Guyaux Claim their 12th West Penn Title

Last month in Cleveland, Chicagoans Chris Maglocci and Denise Murphy came to Region IV and took home the title defeating Kelly Fischer and Jessica Guyaux, 7-6, 7-5. Today’s West Penn final allowed local favorites Fisher/Guyaux to gain revenge by defeating Maglocci/Murphy, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. This was the 12th time that Fischer/Guyaux have claimed the West Penn title.

The round of 16 saw several upsets with the fourth, seventh and eighth seeds going out to unseeded teams. In the quarters, both Maglocci/Murphy (the number 1 seeds) and second seeds Fischer/Guyaux had titanic battles. Maglocci/Murphy prevailed 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 over Wan Collier and Shaheen Bhanji, a strong team from Cleveland. Newcomers Christy Fraser and Emily Fraser gave the eventual champions everything they could handle but fell 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. The semis were far less dramatic with Janet Mazzola and Vicki Brown from Cleveland losing to Maglocci/Murphy. 6-1, 6-3. and Jill Gilbert from Columbus and Kate Kapanowski from Pittsburgh falling to Fischer/Guyaux, 6-3, 6-2.
