Notice of Annual Meeting May 3, 2018

The Annual Meeting of the American Platform Tennis Association will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the Wee Burn Country Club, Darien, CT in order to (1) Elect Directors to serve for the term of three years (in accordance with the APTA By-Laws), and until their successors are elected and qualified, and (2) To act upon such matters as may properly come before the Board.

Vote

Your APTA Board of Directors reorganizes each year following the Annual Meeting. Board Members are elected or re-elected by the members at this meeting. For those of you who cannot attend the meeting, we offer the opportunity to vote by proxy, either by clipping and mailing the form below or by casting your vote after receiving an emailed proxy.

At the May, 2018 meeting we will see the retirement of Sara Lanthier, David Lee, Mark Parsons. Proposed for re-election are Scott Bondurant, Patty Hogan and Justin Stanley.  Proposed for election are Tiernan Cavanna and Max LePivert.

This group is charged with making decisions about the rules, regulations and finances of the APTA.

2017 APTA Board Candidate Profiles

Scott Bondurant

Scott is extremely honored and excited about the opportunity to continue to serve on the APTA Board. In addition to serving as President for the last three years, he served as co-Vice President with Tim McAvoy from 2003-06, then as sole Vice President from 2006-2009. More recently, he has been Chair of the Men’s Player’s Committee and President of Region V. He also has served on the Hall of Fame Committee since 2012. He is amazed by the growth of the game in recent years and looks forward to working hard to sustain it.

Scott has a racquet sports passion and pedigree of close to 50 years. He grew up in a tennis family that was honored as Florida Tennis Family of the Year. His mother, Sally, won the National 50 Women’s Doubles Championships several times, including once with her sister, Platform Tennis Hallof-Famer, Lucie McAvoy. His father, Frank, was ranked #1 in Florida Men’s 60 doubles. Tag-along Scott had no choice but to play tennis if he wanted to be included in family life. While living in New York, his family belonged to both the Fox Meadow Tennis Club and the Manursing Island Club, where he was infused with the notion that platform tennis was a “big time” sport. In tennis, Scott managed to achieve rankings of #1 in Florida 18 & under singles and #1 nationally in 18 & under doubles. He then was co-captain of two NCAA Championship Teams and earned All-American honors while at Stanford University.

After college, he received his MBA at Duke University and went to work on Wall Street for 25+ years with Kidder Peabody, Morgan Stanley, and most recently for UBS Global Asset Management. Since retiring from UBS, Scott has taught as an Adjunct Instructor at Northwestern University and is actively engaged in an entrepreneurial venture. Scott has enjoyed playing platform tennis for over 25 years, mostly in Chicago, although he did have a two-year stint in Atlanta, bringing a paddle court with him from Chicago to the Ansley Golf Club (where it still stands, barely). Scott has had success playing with a number of partners over the years, most notably Bill Fiedler and Mark Johnson, and was ranked in the top 10 for close to 15 years; his highest ranking was #3. In the Masters, he has won 7 National titles.

Tiernan Cavanna

Tiernan has been hooked on platform tennis since 2005. For the past 12 years, she has played in local paddle leagues and tournaments including PCQs, NRTs, as well as Nationals. She also became a certified platform tennis professional in 2015. Tiernan has been on the board of the Fairfield County Women’s Platform Tennis League (FCWPTL) since 2013, working alongside four other board members to organize weekly matches for over 650 women in 11 divisions. After working on the 2016 Nationals committee, Tiernan is extremely excited to bring Nationals back to Fairfield County in 2020.

After playing competitive junior tennis through high school in her home state of Texas, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a business degree and began a career in investment banking. She is currently the CEO of her house of three boys, ages 13, 11 and 8, and her husband of 15 years, Kieran. Tiernan has lived in Fairfield County, first in Rowayton, and then in Darien, since 2004.

Although new to the APTA board, Tiernan took over the role of Region II President in 2016. In addition to the FCWPTL, Tiernan is currently on the board of the Darien Foundation, the Darien Athletic Foundation, and on the executive committee of the Board of Directors of Wee Burn Country Club.

Patty Hogan

Patty is honored to serve a second term. Patty is an enthusiastic and tireless advocate for the sport of platform tennis, and is especially dedicated to the juniors, most recently introducing the APTA’s new “First Serve” initiative, offering free instruction to young players. She also kickstarted the varsity high school paddle tennis league in New Jersey. A former number one singles player at Rutgers University, Patty landed her first tennis teaching job at The Beacon Hill Club in Summit, New Jersey, where she was introduced to paddle and eventually became the club’s year round Director of Tennis and Platform Tennis for many years. Patty was a charter member and past President of the PPTA. In addition, Patty co-authored the APTA’s Self Rating Guide.

Currently, Patty teaches paddle at several New Jersey clubs as well as in Ticonderoga, New York, at Northern Lake George Paddle, the facility she founded four years ago. She helped found the new NJ Flex Paddle League with a group of players in the Morristown area. Also, Dave Broderick and Patty cooked up a slate of B level events, including a B national ranking system and B Nationals, sponsored by the APTA.

Patty is the co-chair of the APTA Junior Nationals and sits on the APTA Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the APTA Umpires Committee, and chairs the APTA Juniors Committee. She is one of the highly respected announcers for the Platform Tennis Network and a frequent contributor to Platform Tennis Magazine. Patty is a national champion in the Women’s Open, Mixed, and Masters 40+ divisions, and was elected into the Platform Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005.

Max Lepivert

Max has been involved with the APTA for many years. First, he started on the Clinics and Exhibition Committee from 2013-2015, where he truly enjoyed helping the game grow in new places. He was also part of the 2016 Nationals Committee in Darien, Connecticut. Max currently chairs the Super Committee that oversees all Grand Prix and National Tournaments and sits on the Rules Committee.

Max comes to us from Nice, France, where he grew up playing on red clay and was ranked as one of the top players in the country. Shortly after moving to the United States, he received a scholarship to the University of Miami in Florida. He played singles and doubles while earning his degree in international business. He started his teaching career at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, where he worked for seven years. Max then went on to spend five summers as the Head Professional at the Westmoor Club in Nantucket, Massachusetts, while spending his winters at the Rye Racquet Club in Rye, New York. After two years at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, CT, he became the Director of Racquets at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, NY, from 2011 to 2015.

Max is now the Director of Racquets at Aspetuck Valley Country Club in Weston, CT, where he runs an active tennis and paddle program. Max is an avid paddle player and credits his first partner, Mike Gillespie, for teaching him how to play the game. He enjoys playing in the NRTs, Grand Prix events, and Nationals, and has been ranked as high as #3 in the country. He has won two Blanchard Cup titles (with Juan Arraya and George Wilkinson) and hopes to add a few more titles along the way.

Mark Parsons

Mark Parsons is a three-time national champion with over 15 years experience in teaching platform tennis and tennis in New York and Connecticut.

A former All-American singles tennis player at the University of Tennessee.  Mark has contributed many instructional articles in Platform Tennis Magazine and is on the forefront of new platform tennis teaching concepts. A former PPTA board member and former Region II President  and winning President’s Cup Captain, he has been on the APTA board since 2016. He is currently the Director of Racquets at Siwanoy Country Club.

Justin “J” Stanley

J started playing paddle tennis in the winter of 1971. He was introduced to paddle by his future wife’s family, who has a long paddle history. His wife’s mother, Sallie McClure, helped bring paddle to Chicago and she won numerous state titles. Her father, John Van Norden, helped start paddle tennis with such luminaries as Rawle Deland and Dick Hebard in Scarsdale, New York.

Back in the day when J started, he used wooden paddles with absolutely no grit, courts were wooden with no heaters, and the Chicago paddle league had all of eight teams. Paddle came relatively easy to him since he had played some tennis and squash in college. The joy of being outside and enjoying the camaraderie made paddle an easy sport to love. Over the years, J participated in many local and national tournaments. The most enjoyable have been with his wife (they won a couple of Illinois State Married Mixed tournaments), brother-in-law, John McClure, partner Jim McNitt, and his more mature partner, Alan Graham.

In the late 1970s, a friend, Rick Mayer, handed off the responsibility of Treasurer of the Chicago Platform Tennis Charities, a position J has held ever since. Over the years, he has spent time trying to make President (and Hall-of-Famer) Alan Graham look good on and off the court.

J is 69 years young, retired, and has been married to his wife, Sallie, since 1982. They have two fabulous daughters, Marion and Anne, who enjoy paddle as well, as do their spouses.

This will be J’s second term with the APTA Board as Treasurer, and he is looking forward to serving again with a fantastic group of enthusiasts.
