New Leagues Join the APTA

At the November 2 board meeting at Chicago’s Glen View Club, Executive Director Ann Sheedy announced that four new leagues have joined the APTA. The APTA is delighted to welcome these groups of players from New England, Detroit, and New Jersey, and to have the opportunity to help further the growth of the game in these areas.
500 players compete on Sunday mornings in the Men’s Interstate Paddle League. The 49 teams spread out over six divisions are primarily from Northern NJ, with two clubs from Southern New York. The season ends each March with a playoff of the top four teams in each division playing the semis and finals on the same day. The A finals are held early in the afternoon and the entire league is invited to a lunch with spicy Jamaican chicken and ribs (cooked by the world famous Neilbo.)
Greater Boston Women’s Paddle Tennis League (GBWPPTL)
The 100 players in the Greater Boston Women's Paddle Tennis League hail from South Shore (Duxbury) to North Shore (Marblehead, Essex) to York, Maine. The players in this Tuesday morning league travel up to one-two hours to meet other teams from the Boston area. At the end of each season (in December and March), there are challenge matches where the top three teams in each flight challenge the bottom three teams in the flight ahead of them.
Detroit Platform Tennis Association Men’s League
The recently formed Detroit Platform Tennis Association Men's League has 128 players signed up for its inaugural season and is looking forward to many others joining. The league, which encompasses the Greater Detroit metropolitan area, is excited to be a participating member of the APTA and to play in the APTA National League Championships at the end of the season. A special thank you to Jay Reynolds, Mike Shields, Bill Flom, Chris Davis, Frank Willard, Lincoln Wirgau, Bill Smith, Madeleine Paolucci and many others for all their work in creating and organizing the league.
Shoreline Platform Tennis League
Experienced tournament director Leslie Haskins had been thinking of starting a league along the coastline of Rhode Island, extending to Stonington, CT, and Cape Cod and Scituate, MA, for several years, and she made it a reality this fall. The starting membership is 49, but should increase quickly.
