Green Mountain Open Returns To The Upper Valley For The 14th Time

November 9, 2016
Quechee, VT

What began as a joint effort between The Norwich Racquet Club and the Woodstock Sports Center to provide an APTA-sponsored men’s platform tennis event has morphed into a three-day event: women on Friday, men on Saturday and mixed doubles on Sunday. Hurricane Irene disrupted not only much of Vermont but also the consecutive running of this popular tournament when it irretrievably damaged the Woodstock paddle courts in 2011.

One year later the Quechee Club installed two new paddle courts and partnered with the Norwich Racquet Club to co-host the GMO. The tournament continues to attract talented players from all over New England, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Players enjoy reconnecting with old combatants and meeting new teams. Both clubs provide a welcoming attitude with breakfast goodies, lunches, prizes, favors, and good will. This year there were 8 women’s teams, 16 men’s teams, and 12 mixed doubles teams who enjoyed a late fall weekend in the beautiful Upper Valley. Congratulations to the winners and all of the participants.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who make this a friendly competition. Sandy Pomeroy, with Sugar Generaux and Martha Roiter, ran the women’s event, importing wine just in time for the final/reprieve viewing. David Barlow, Todd Tyson, and Reid Babcox did the heavy lifting pre- and post-tournament.

RESULTS:
Women: Sandra Duryea/Victoria Cran def. Tamara Knobloch/Natalie Sanders, 6-2, 6-2
Men: Andrew Hocker/Justin Poletti def. Ed Hughes/Mike McGrath, 6-4 6-2
Mixed: Leslie Haskins/Nick Raho def. Laurie Rosen/Todd Tyson, 6-7, 6-0, 6-0
