Platform Tennis in the Garden of Good and Evil

December 5, 2011
Savannah, GA

SavannahSavannah has many charms, including majestic live oaks, antebellum attractions, wonderful weather, and (thankfully for those of us on Skidaway Island) platform tennis.

On Friday, Nov. 18th, seven-time senior national champion Danny Galves organized an evening exhibition to reacquaint residents and introduce newcomers to the sport. The Landings, a private development on Skidaway, has two paddle courts and a seemingly endless number of talented athletes.

More than 40 people came out to see the island’s new tennis pros (Scott Mitchell, David Wolf, and Frank Vermeer) compete against several avid northeast players who have relocated to the island, including Galves, two-time national champion Meri Lobel Campbell, teaching pro Walter Campbell, former APTA president Brian Zevnik, and current APTA board member Tina Kelly. All tennis pros took readily to the screens, especially Wolf who is a younger brother of three-time women’s champion Linda Wolf.

Savannah is grooming players to send to President’s Cup; here we come, Region VII!
