Du Randt-Parsons, McNitt-Shpiz Take Chicago Charties

November 4, 2012
Chicago, IL

Congratulations to Jane McNitt and Wendy Shpiz for their victory in the Chicago Charities Women's Open, defeating Mary Doten and Chelsea Nusslock in the final. Although hurricane Sandy reduced the ranks of the women's draw, taking out top seeded teams from the east coast, the draw was still 48 teams strong and included some significant talent.

We all know that the number of Nationally seeded teams, and the level of play it brings, is only one part of these big tournaments. The rest of the field is more focused on personal achievement, and personal relationships. Carina Kealy and Moly Schmidt's upset win in the round of 32 Consolation final had only a few spectators, but it was as important to them as if they had done it in the main final. Relative newcomers Anneliese Adkinson and Christine Reisman may have gone the "3 and out" route and won only a few games, but they had a great time and got to play matches that are tough to find in their hometown of Columbus, OH.

The men's draw saw little loss of strength as nearly all the best players were in town. The earliest upset came in the second round when Bondurant-Johnson defleated number 5 seeds DeRose and Lubow, but those teams only faced each other early because Bondurant-Johnson didn't play together last year so didn't have the ranking points needed to be seeded. The only other seeds to go out before the quarter finals were Bancila and Berka, who were defeated by McKnight and Rose in the round of 16. By the final it was down to the top 2 seeds: 2012 Nationals Champs Drew Broderick and Chris Gambino versus 2010 National Champ Johan du Randt and 2011 National Champ Mark Parsons. Du Randt and Parsons won in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. (More commentary by Patricio Misitrano at Paddle Times)

May thanks to John Noble, Robyn Cohn, Alan Graham, Anne and Walter Fyk, the numerous other volunteers, and the valued sponsors for another fantastic year in Chicago.

Don't try this move!

Jane McNitt executes a scary but beautiful dive and roll in the Chicago Charities Women's Open final. Don't worry, Jane showed us this same move 3 times in the semi final, and, just like in that match, she popped right up and kept on playing. She and Wendy Shpiz went on to win the match and the title. (More Points)
